Preston Jones McPherson

From: An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon (Lewis Publishing Co., 1893), by Rev. H. K. Hine, D.D.

P. J. McPherson, Assessor of Lane County, was born at Tipton, Missouri, in Aug, 1848. His parents, J. C. and Mary E. (Scott) McPherson, were natives of Kentucky, but both emigrated to Missouri with their parents among the pioneer settlers, and were married. Mr. McPherson reclaimed a small farm from the prairie, and they resided there until the spring of 1852, when he sold and with his wife and children started for Oregon. His conveyance was the regulation "schooner" and his motive power the ox team. Starting up on the 13th of April, their progress was slow but sure, and meeting with no unusual adventure they landed at The Dalles on the 1st of September, and went thence to the mouth of the Sandy. The family making the trip on the Columbia, and the cattle taking to the trail. At the Sandy they again took their wagons and drove to Portland, then up the Willamette valley, and located a donation claim of 320 acres, near the present town of Silverton, and then they followed farming and improved the claim, until 1864, when he sold and purchased 120 acres near Springfield, and there they resided until 1884, when they removed to Eugene, and Mr. McPherson died, in 1885, but his widow still survives.

P. J. McPherson is the eldest of six children who reached to age of maturity. He was educated in Oregon and continued to reside with his parents, engaging in farming until 1872, when he was married to Catherine Landis, of Iowa, and daughter of Abram Landis, pioneer of 1853. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. McPherson settled upon his farm and remained there until 1885, when he removed to Eugene, and bought town property, building his present home on Thirteenth Street, between Patterson and Ferry. As Assessor of Lane County Mr. McPherson has performed long and faithful service. He was first elected by the Democratic party in 1878, and re-elected in 1880 and 1882. He then retired from office and followed the grain-commission and warehouse-storage business, but he was again elected in 1890, and is now, in 1892, a nominee of the Democratic party for the same position. His continuous recall to this office is the best recommendation that could be given him by the people as to his ability, integrity and honest discharge of duty. He is a member of I.O.O.F.
