Talk:Geography

From Cod

Isn't the Western Sea to the east of Truce Valley, not a bay? We also need a name for the ocean outside that bay. Any good names for oceans - from Wind Waker, maybe?

That entire Haunted Wasteland area used to be Hyrule? I thought it was part of Guardia for some reason! I think we might need a political map, now that we know about all these cities. :D

Or just a politics section in general. I have some soldiers claiming to be from Guardia castle, but largely I never really notice any government or law enforcement aside from my own as the Truce Militia. Most of our places seem (at first glance, this may not be what you intended) to be a typical RPG world with most towns just being bunches of people not strongly loyal to any central government. Notable exceptions are the Guardia/Fa'Diel border guard (who claims to have been forgotten about, enhancing the feel of any governent control being poor at best) and the Viorar/Wutai guards and Shrike/Monotoli police force (all of which again suggest each city being on its own). So, what is the intention here? Do central goverments exist? Are they strong yet mostly transparent in effect, or little more than figureheads? Would they object if Milo just declared himself in charge? Oops... I didn't ask that. Move along. -- Milo 22:09, 31 January 2006 (PST)

I am assuming there are theoretical guards and such in the populated areas of Guardia. The whole Guardia Castle thing is a fantasy I will keep alluding to in RP I participate in when I get a chance. I would say Guardia has no king and is merely run by an elected group of officials (who elect their succeedors): the Knights of the Square Table or whatever it was called in Chrono Trigger. I assume they are all from wealthy families and not all necessarily Knights. The interest of Guardia Castle is mainly in maintaining order in the land, which is pretty much split into three regions. Occasionally they deal with some evil invading armies, but these armies always seem to end up at Truce where the citizens (or the hippies hanging out at the plaza fountain) are surprisingly durable. Magus Island is pretty close to Guardia, I dunno what to say about that. Allies, but don't bother us types there I suppose?

Fa'Diel has no strong central government. The sparse Fa'Diel soldiers you see around are part of an independently funded organization mainly used to keep some security in the trade routes (this is why you only see them on the trade routes). The border between Guardia and Fa'Diel is somewhat contrived, considering Guardia could take over most of the region with little resistance. However, Fa'Diel is mostly wilderness and they are harmless. The theoretical Beast Kingdom is an exception. They exist within the Fa'Diel region and choose to ally with those Fa'Dielians (??) because most people in the closer towns are not human and the Beastmen are racist.

Shadmire is a monarchy that is pretty lax on its rules and is basically a whore for other kingdoms and their "embassies." This is why Goan soldiers are prancing around but not really taking over.

I don't know about Hyrule. The Haunted Wasteland region technically belongs to them, but is separated from the main Hyrule by ocean and is now all desert so they care nothing for it.

Goa is a dictatorship and Vandole is a monarchy.

geographical feature names

Do we know the names of any geographical features (mountains, oceans, lakes, rivers, seas) outside of the Guardia/Fa'Diel/Hyrule area?

Or any rivers at all besides the mighty Lete?

Finalizing The Geography of the Cleft

I think players may find it harder to make up a character in RP that is CleftBorn when there is no real history to the areas around the Cleft. I find it difficult to make up history for the areas around the Cleft or making connections between areas (not physical) that don't seem too arbitrary when I'm not sure what will ever been in the Cleft. In the past there has been references to whole continents that do not yet exist, and I'm wondering if they ever will, and in what locations.

There are different levels of concern, ranging from the Beast Kingdom, which can easily be built whenever as a single area. Then there's the "Shadmire" continent which will take years of work but seem to definitely be there for sure. Then there's the Goa areas that only get referenced once in a while in quests and some RP, which I feel like will never be built. Then there's "Hyrule" which doesn't really get mentioned much and maybe it doesn't really exist.

I just want to know what we are going to keep around and what should we see go? Should we establish a general geography or make the Cleft "always expanding" in a way that suddenly a vortex appears over the ocean, stretching it further out and plopping another continent out? Should we just keep our timeline very vague to allow flexibility?
